Our Favorite Children's Books From Indigenous Authors

Tomorrow is Indigenous Peoples Day and we wanted to share some of our favorite picture books written by Indigenous authors as well as some organizations you can support year round!

Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story written by Kevin Noble Maillard is a beautiful family story that is rich in culture and tradition. There is even a fry bread recipe in the back of the book that my daughter loves!

We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom is an increasingly important message about the scaredness of the Earth and the need to protect our water. The threat to Indigenous land in the book provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of community and collective humanity.

Bowwow Powwow by Brenda J. Child is a powerful, yet whimsical story of a young Indigenous girl names Windy. As she attends a powwow, she takes in the beautiful dancing and songs. She later falls asleep under the stars and dreams of a magical powwow in which all the dancers are dogs.

I Hope by Monique Gray Smith is a new book that we can’t WAIT to read. It is a compelling message of love, nurture, and best wishes for children as they grow. This is sure to be a beautiful gift to give any parent.

Berry Song by Michaela Goade is a story of a young girl and her grandmother living by the sea and gathering gifts from the earth. It’s a marvelous tale about learning from our elders and the power of celebrating the land.

Here are some organizations you should follow and donate if you can:
